Concept Brainstorming
Why Spectrum?
Parsons School of Design's Design and Technology Master's program is a multi-disciplinary design education student from diverse backgrounds (from design, engineering, biology, philosophy, psychology, linguistics, sociology, music theory, etc) get together, experimenting with various new technologies. It's where true collaboration happening with a convergence of many different academic disciplines.
For our annual thesis show, our Graphics team & thesis committee members came up with the concept of "SPECTRUM" to represent the major's diversity, creativity, vibrant energy in a united graphic identity. Starting with this initial idea of Spectrum, concept sketch, we created coherent, solid visual identity along with a logo type which can be applicable to different social media handles and PR materials and easy to remember.
Visual Design Process: Physical to Digital
The visual typography of SPECTRUM is created by laster cutting the designed geometric letters above.
We aimed to combine tactile reality with digital, representing DT students physical + digital works, yet futuristic and open to imagination and magic. The holographic color scheme implies the blend skills of master's students and collaborations between people from diverse backgrounds.
Thesis Show Website
Collaborating the web team, the Graphics and visual guidelines (fonts, layouts, logo in CSS) applied to the entire thesis show website (http://mfadt.parsons.edu/2017/) and student profile pages as well.
Final Keynote + Symposium: Youtube LiveStream
Event Posters: Exhibition, Performance+Screening Night, Symposium, Interactive Showcase (AR/VR+Games, Products+Web)
When we designed the main graphic, we carefully considered what is going to look like in each different medium. Within the color scheme, the identity design was flexibly adapted to each different thesis events still keeping its consistency.
Print Design (Posters, Banners, Photo Wall)
The unified symbol created a unique, strong visual identity that stands out among other posters.
Web Banners for Social Media Handles
Facebook, Twitter, EventBrite, Evensi, Youtube, etc.
Graduation Photoshoot Art Direction
Through 3 days of photoshoot and production, we had completed over 80 master’s candidates’ portraits for the thesis show. With social media banners and promotional materials, the unified portraits played a significant role to share our thesis show to the public as people share their profile photos.
